How often to change furnace and hood filters
Filters are easy to forget. A clogged furnace filter makes the blower work harder and lets dust settle on every surface. A greasy range hood filter stops pulling smoke and odours, and the grease can drip back onto the stove.

Picking the right filter
Most furnaces take a 1-inch filter that is changed every one to three months, or a thicker media filter that lasts longer. A higher MERV rating catches finer dust, but a very fine filter can restrict airflow on some furnaces, so we check what yours is built for. Metal mesh hood filters can usually be cleaned and reused. Carbon filters cannot be cleaned and usually need replacing every few months.

How often should a furnace filter be changed?
Most 1-inch filters need changing every one to three months, more often with pets or renovation dust. Thicker media filters usually last longer; the box tells you.
Which MERV rating should I use?
A mid-range rating suits most homes. Very high ratings catch more dust but can slow airflow on some furnaces, so we check what yours can handle.
Can grease filters be cleaned instead of replaced?
Metal mesh and baffle filters can usually be degreased and reused. Carbon filters in hoods that don't vent outside can't be cleaned and must be replaced.
Do you service the furnace itself?
No. We change filters and check vent covers. Burner, gas or blower repairs need a heating technician, and we tell you if we see signs of a problem.
What if I don't know my filter size?
We read it from the frame of the old filter or measure the slot, and leave the sizes written down so you can buy the right ones next time.
