When to replace a bathroom fan

A bathroom fan has one job: remove moisture before it causes peeling paint, swollen trim or mould on the ceiling. Most bathroom fans last 10 to 15 years. After that, the motor slows down and the fan makes noise without moving much air.

Signs it's time

  • The mirror is still foggy 20 minutes after a shower.
  • The fan rattles, hums or squeals.
  • A tissue held against the cover doesn't stay in place.
  • There are water stains or mould spots around the fan.
  • It smells hot or burnt. Switch it off and contact us.

Replace it or upgrade it

In most homes the new fan fits in the same opening. It's also a good time to choose a quieter fan, one with a humidity sensor that turns on by itself, or one with a light. If the old fan was never connected to an outside vent, this is the moment to fix it. We explain each option and its price before you decide.

Questions about bathroom exhaust fan replacement

How do I know my bathroom fan needs replacing?

The usual signs are a mirror that stays foggy long after a shower, a fan that rattles or hums, weak suction at the cover, or water stains around the fan.

Can you put in a quieter or stronger fan?

Yes. Most new fans fit the existing opening. If a bigger fan needs a larger opening or duct, we tell you and price it first.

Where does the fan have to vent?

Outside. A fan that blows into the attic moves the moisture somewhere it can cause mould, so we check the duct and the outside flap.

Do you supply the fan?

We can supply a fan that suits the room, or install one you bought. We agree on it before the visit.

Do you also replace range hoods?

Yes, range hood installation is a separate service. You can mention it in the booking form and we plan both in one visit.
