Planning a mudroom bench for winter
An entrance bench works hard in winter: wet boots, road salt, heavy coats and backpacks every day. Planning it around how your family comes and goes helps it last longer and stay tidy.
Things to plan
- A seat height comfortable for everyone, usually around knee height.
- Open cubbies or a tray below for wet boots, so they can drain and dry.
- Two rows of hooks: higher for adults, lower for kids.
- A shelf above for hats, gloves and baskets.
- Finishes that handle water and salt.
Built-in or freestanding
A freestanding bench can be moved, but a built-in bench with a backer panel fixed into studs is far stronger and fits the space exactly. Painted MDF looks good but should be kept away from standing water, while hardwood or a sealed top holds up better near the door. If the entrance is small, a narrower bench with more hooks may suit you better than a deep one. We go over the options and the price with you before any work starts.

How much space do I need for a mudroom bench?
Even a short wall can fit a small bench with hooks above. We measure the entrance and check that doors and closets still open fully.
Can the bench have storage underneath?
Yes. Open cubbies, a lift-up seat or baskets below are common choices. Open storage is better for wet boots because it lets them dry.
Will the hooks hold heavy winter coats and backpacks?
Yes, when they are mounted on a backer board fixed into studs. We use solid hooks, not decorative ones that bend.
Can you build it in a front hall instead of a mudroom?
Yes. Many homes have no separate mudroom, so we often fit a slim bench and hooks in a front hall or by the side door.
