What is wrong with your trim and doors?
Choose the one closest to your situation.
Vacuums, chairs and shoes knock paint off the baseboards. We fill dents, sand them smooth and repaint so the line is clean again.
Older oil-based paints yellow with age, especially away from daylight. We prime properly and repaint with a paint that is less prone to yellowing.
Houses move with the seasons and old caulk dries out. We recaulk the gaps so the trim looks tight and the paint line is straight.

Getting trim and doors to look sharp
Trim and doors take more knocks and hands than any other painted surface in the house. A fresh coat on baseboards, casings and doors can make a room look finished even when the walls stay the same.

Oil, latex and finish
Many older homes have oil-based paint on the trim. Latex paint does not bond well to it without the right primer, so we test the existing paint first. Semi-gloss is the usual choice for trim and doors because it is tough and easy to wipe. Doors can be brushed in place, or taken down and sprayed for a smoother finish. Spraying needs more setup but gives the most even result on panelled doors.

Questions about trim, baseboard and door painting
Do you take the doors off to paint them?
It depends on the finish you want. Brushing in place works well, and for a smoother finish we take the doors down, spray them and rehang them.
How do I know if my trim has oil-based paint?
A quick test with rubbing alcohol on a cloth tells us. If the paint is oil-based, we use a bonding primer so the new coat doesn't peel.
Which sheen is best for baseboards?
Semi-gloss is the most common. It stands up to scuffs and wipes clean easily, and satin is an option if you prefer less shine.
Can you paint stained wood trim white?
Yes. The wood is cleaned, lightly sanded and primed with a stain-blocking primer so the wood tone doesn't bleed through.
How soon can I close the doors after painting?
Most paints feel dry within hours but stay soft for a few days. We tell you when the doors can be closed without sticking.
