Choosing a wainscoting style
Wainscoting covers the lower part of the wall, often about a third of its height, and is capped with a chair rail. Paired with crown moulding at the ceiling, it gives a room a finished, framed look.
Common styles
- Beadboard: narrow vertical grooves, a relaxed look for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Board and batten: flat panels with vertical strips, popular in entrances.
- Raised or flat panels: a more formal look for dining and living rooms.
- Tall panelling: wainscoting taken two thirds of the way up the wall.
Crown moulding on real ceilings
Few walls and ceilings are perfectly straight, especially in older houses. A larger crown hides small dips better, while a very thin profile shows every wave. Inside corners are usually coped instead of mitred, so they stay tight as the house moves through the seasons. In bathrooms, moisture-resistant panels hold up better than plain MDF. We hold the profile and mark the height on the wall before cutting, so you know exactly how it will look.

Can crown moulding go on uneven ceilings?
Yes, it just takes more care. We follow the ceiling line, cope the inside corners and caulk the top edge so small dips don't show.
How high should wainscoting go?
Many people choose about a third of the wall height or line it up with the window sills. Taller board and batten suits entrances. We mark it on the wall so you can see it first.
Can wainscoting go in a bathroom?
Yes, with moisture-resistant materials such as PVC or properly sealed boards. Plain MDF is not a good choice near a shower or tub.
Do I need to move furniture before you start?
Please pull furniture away from the walls we're working on. We cover the floors and anything that stays in the room.
