Humidity makes wood doors swell, and loose hinges let them sag into the frame. We tighten or shim the hinges and plane the edge only if needed.
When the door shifts, the latch misses the strike plate. We realign the door first, then adjust the strike so it catches easily.
A sagging door leaves an uneven gap that lets in air and light. We square the door in the frame and check the weatherstripping.

Why exterior doors stop closing properly
Exterior doors face sun, rain and big temperature swings. Wood doors take on moisture and swell in humid weather, then shrink in winter. Houses also settle over the years, and hinge screws work loose. The result is a door that sticks in one season and leaks air in the next.
Signs it needs alignment
- The door rubs at the top corner or along the latch side.
- You have to lift or push it hard to lock it.
- The gap around the door is uneven.
- Light or cold air comes in at one corner.
- The hinge screws are loose or the hinges look bent.
What to expect
Most doors can be realigned at the hinges without taking much off the door. Planing is a last step, because a door planed in summer can leave a gap in winter. If we do plane an edge, it should be sealed or painted so it doesn't soak up water. If we find rot in the jamb or sill, we stop and show you before going further.

Questions about door alignment
Why does my door stick only in summer?
Wood absorbs humidity and swells in warm, wet weather. Adjusting the hinges often fixes it without cutting the door.
Will you have to cut my door?
Only if adjusting the hinges and strike isn't enough. If we plane an edge, we tell you first and recommend sealing it.
Can a warped door be straightened?
A slightly warped door can often be made to close by adjusting the stop and strike. A badly warped door usually needs replacing, and we tell you honestly.
Can you fix the drafts at the same time?
Yes. Once the door is aligned, we check the weatherstripping and sweep. New seals are priced separately if needed.
Does this work for swinging patio doors too?
