Widening doorways and window openings in Toronto
Is a doorway too narrow for a wheelchair or walker, or do you want a bigger window opening? We check the wall first, then widen the opening, reframe it and fit the door or window properly.
The price is agreed before we start. If we find something unexpected, we stop and show you first.

Why does the opening need to be wider?
Choose the one closest to your situation.
Many older interior doorways are narrower than a wheelchair needs. We widen the opening and fit a wider door, or use swing-clear hinges if a few centimetres is enough.
Walkers and canes catch on a tight frame and trim. A wider opening, or a doorway without a door, gives a clear path.
A larger window needs a wider opening and a new header above it. We check the wall and quote the framing before any cutting.

What to know before widening a doorway
Widening a doorway is more than cutting the wall. The opening needs new framing, a header across the top, and a door and trim that fit the new size. The wall itself decides how big the job is.
What we check first
- Whether the wall is load-bearing, which changes the header and the work around it.
- Light switches, outlets, pipes or ducts inside the wall near the opening.
- The floor on both sides, so the new threshold sits level.
- For windows, the outside finish: siding is simpler to cut than brick or stone.
How wide is wide enough
For a wheelchair, accessibility guidelines usually ask for a clear opening of roughly 80 to 85 centimetres or more. Sometimes swing-clear hinges gain enough space without touching the wall. If the wall is load-bearing or brick, the work is structural, is quoted separately and may need an engineer's design. We explain the options and agree on the plan and price before any cutting starts.

Questions about doorway widening
How do I know if my wall is load-bearing?
Walls that run across the floor joists or carry a floor above often are. We check on site, and if it is load-bearing, the structural part is quoted separately before anything is cut.
Can I reuse my old door?
Usually not, because the opening ends up wider than the old door. We can supply a new door or hang one you bought in the new size.
Is there a way to gain space without cutting the wall?
Sometimes. Swing-clear hinges move the door out of the opening when it is open and add a few centimetres of clear width.
What happens if there is wiring in the wall?
We tell you before cutting. Moving a switch or outlet is quoted separately and done to code.
Will there be a lot of dust?
Cutting drywall and framing makes dust, so we cover floors and nearby furniture and clean up when the work is done.
