How to tell if your window sill needs repair

Window sills take more water than any other part of a window. Rain sits on them, snow melts on them, and once the paint or caulk cracks, the wood starts to soak it up. Caught early, rot can usually be cut out and repaired without replacing the whole window.

Signs it's time

  • A screwdriver sinks easily into the sill or the bottom of the frame.
  • Paint is peeling or bubbling along the sill.
  • The caulk around the outside of the window is cracked or missing.
  • You feel cold air at the corners of the frame.
  • There are dark stains on the wall or trim below the window.

Repair or replace

If the rot is shallow, we fill it with a two-part epoxy filler that can be shaped and sanded like wood. If it goes deeper, we replace the sill or the damaged piece of frame. On the outside, aluminum capping is an option that covers the wood and cuts down on painting. We show you what we find and agree on the repair before we start.

Questions about window frame and sill repair

Can a rotten sill be repaired, or does the window need replacing?

Most of the time the sill can be repaired or replaced on its own. If the rot has spread into the sash or most of the frame, we tell you before doing any work.

Do you repair vinyl window frames too?

We can reseal vinyl frames, replace the trim and close gaps around them. A cracked vinyl frame usually can't be patched well, and we tell you honestly if that is the case.

What decides how long the repair takes?

How deep the rot goes and how many windows are involved. Epoxy repairs also need time to cure before sanding and priming.

Will the repair be painted?

We prime the new wood and filler so they are protected. Finish painting can be added if you ask, priced before we start.

Is it better to do this before winter?

Yes, if you can. Sealing gaps before the cold weather stops drafts and keeps melting snow from soaking into the wood.

Need it fixed soon?

Message us on WhatsApp and we will find you the earliest available day.
